Learn about American musicals from a musicologist from the USA.
We will explore clips from American musicals throughout the 20th Century to see how the musical developed as an adaptation of British Operetta and Vaudville variety shows, but dealt with serious and specifically American social issues. We will watch excerpts from the musicals Showboat, South Pacific, Stephen Sondheim’s Company, and Hamilton, the hottest ticket in New York right now.
The lector Emily Erken is a musicologist who specializes in opera and literature from Russia. Her secondary specialty is in American popular music. She earned her PhD at Ohio State University in December 2015.
Emily is currently located in Moscow. She is researching Soviet productions of Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin, and preparing a book manuscript about the important role of Eugene Onegin in Russian culture. She teaches online courses for Ohio State University, and enjoys sharing her knowledge and love for music with students of all backgrounds.
