Queen Bey has created her own brand of “soft feminism.” Her 20 year career has brought her enormous financial success through a mixture of light-hearted dance pop and social criticism. But which is more important? Does Beyoncé’s popularity serve her social agenda, or is it all about earning money?
The lector Emily Erken is a musicologist who specializes in opera and literature from Russia. Her secondary specialty is in American popular music. She earned her PhD at Ohio State University in December 2015.
Emily is currently located in Moscow. She is researching Soviet productions of Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin, and preparing a book manuscript about the important role of Eugene Onegin in Russian culture. She teaches online courses for Ohio State University, and enjoys sharing her knowledge and love for music with students of all backgrounds.
